Overview

One product is never just one discipline

At first glance, the audio station looks like a simple interactive device with a set of buttons. In reality, creating a product like this requires several disciplines to work together as one system.

For the audio station developed for the Branko Ćopić House, the goal was not simply to build a device. We wanted to create an intuitive way for visitors to discover stories about Branko Ćopić’s life and work in Serbian and English.

Each button activates a different audio story, while the product itself has to remain simple to use, stable, durable and reliable in everyday operation.

Five disciplines in one product

This project is a good example of how a single product can require several different areas of expertise at the same time.

Industrial design defines the form of the product, the arrangement of controls and the way visitors interact with it.

Mechanical construction defines the steel structure, the angle of the control surface, stability and integration of all internal components.

Electronics connects the buttons, audio components, control hardware and power system.

Software manages the interaction logic and organizes the audio content in two languages.

Manufacturing turns all of those decisions into a physical product through metal fabrication, machining, finishing, assembly and testing.

Only when all five disciplines work together does the device become a complete product.

From raw steel to a finished device

The process began with the fabrication of the metal pedestal and housing. The structure had to be strong enough for a public environment while remaining visually simple and unobtrusive so that the content stayed in focus.

The control surface was then prepared with precise positions for buttons, speakers and other functional components. After fabrication came finishing and painting, followed by electronics integration, wiring and assembly.

Every stage influenced the next. The position of a button affects the wiring. The electronics affect the internal layout. The structure determines how components can be mounted, protected and serviced.

That is why having one team responsible for the complete development process makes a difference.

The interaction should feel simple

For the visitor, the experience is straightforward: press a button and hear a new story.

But making that interaction simple requires careful work behind the scenes — from ergonomics and control layout to electronics, audio playback, wiring, enclosure design and testing.

With products like this, quality is not only visible in how they look. It is also reflected in how naturally and reliably they work in the environment for which they were designed.

Why one integrated team matters

When industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronics, software and manufacturing are developed within one team, decisions can be coordinated from the beginning.

Instead of treating the enclosure, electronics and software as separate tasks, every element is developed as part of the same product.

The audio station for the Branko Ćopić House is therefore more than a device with buttons. It is an example of how an idea becomes a functional interactive product through several disciplines working toward one common goal.
